A Brief Description of Indo-European Family of Languages

Indo-European family is a large family of languages. Most languages from this family are spoken and written in India and greater part of Europe. There are also several languages from Asia that are included into this family.

Indo-European family has ten groups of languages. Some of the most important of them are Aryan group, Celtic group, Balto Slavic group, Greek group, Italic group and Germanic group.

Sanskrit belongs to the Aryan group of this large family. Avesta of Iran also belongs to this group. Apart from these, several other dialects that are spoken in India also belong to this group. Celtic group comprises Irish and Scottish. Balto Slavic group is home to Baltic and Slavic languages that include Lithuanian, Russian, Polish and Czech to name a few. Doric, Attic and Ionic are some of the dialects that are included in the Greek group. French, Portuguese, Spanish and Italian form part of the large Italic group. English, Ango-Saxon, German, Gothic, Swedish and Dutch are some of the languages that belong to Germanic group of the Indo-European family of languages.
